02/16/2017, 2 Alarm Dwelling, Millville City, Cumberland County NJ, 621 N. 4th St.
In the morning hours of a windy, Feb. 16, 2017, Millville Fire Dept. Sta. 30 all call, was dispatched to 621 N. 4th St. for a reported dwelling fire. Responding units were advised, the caller reported heavy black smoke coming from the chimney area of a possible vacant dwelling. Engine 34 arrived with smoke showing from the "D" side of the dwelling and struck the working fire box. This dispatched Millville paid firefighters and Millville Rescue Squad 98 to the scene. Crews quickly knocked the fire on the first floor, but were met with heavy fire conditions on the 2nd and 3rd floors. Due to deteriorating conditions, command sounded the emergency evacuation tones, and requested the 2nd alarm struck. This added, Engine 29-01 (Rosenhayn), Ladder 2 (Vineland), and Rescue 39 (Downe Twp.), to the scene. Once mutual aid arrived, crews gained the upper hand, and switched back to offensive operations. Ladder 2 and Ladder 35's crews went into service opening 2 vent holes in the roof. Command placed the fire under control in about an hour. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Its reported the house was vacant. Millville PD and Cumberland County Salvation Army Canteen Unit, also assisted at the scene. Heislerville Fire Co. Engine 25-01, covered Sta. 30 for the duration of the call.
